Detailed description of Rutgers University Golf Course

Rutgers University Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1894, when four men and four women organized the New Brunswick Golf Club. One of the earliest clubs in the United States, it was among the first members of the United States Golf Association. The first course consisted of six holes, laid out on rented land east of Livingston Avenue between Delavan and Lawrence Streets, and extending to Remsen Avenue.

In 1897, a 9-hole, 2,396-yard course was built in Piscataway on property leased from George W. Metlar. As was customary at the time, the holes bore names such as Valley, Pie-Crust, Carry-All, and Goblet. Serving as the clubhouse was the historic Ross Hall that was built by Edward Antill in 1740 and housed General Washington and his staff.

By 1912, with over 250 members, the club was prosperous enough to purchase 118 acres further out on River Road.

In 1933, the Depression led to the bankruptcy of the club, which was purchased in 1935 by Rutgers for $15,000.

A new era was launched in 1961 with the construction of an 18-hole course. Expertly designed by Hal Purdy, the course was officially opened May 29,1963.

The course is located on Rutgers University's Busch Campus in Piscataway. Over 6,300 yards in length, the picturesque, tree-lined course is a par 71 and offers a challenging layout with four teeing areas per hole. Highlights include narrow fairways, fast greens, and water hazards on nine holes.

The course used to be a great place to play and enjoy a challenging round. The new pro, Jill is obsessed with pushing as many golfers through as fast as possible. For example, if you tee off and there was two open times ahead of you, they will push you to catch up to the group two holes ahead of you. They have even forced groups to skip a hole to catch them. She has removed bunkers and cut the bottoms off of every tree on the course. No longer is it a fairways and greens course. As a result, rangers ride around with watches timing your every move. They don't say a thing to anyone about courtesy, replacing divots, fixing ball marks, raking bunkers, etc. At the first tee, the ranger will tell you that if you don't move fast, they will move you. Just a great golf friendly course! NOT! So now, the course that everyone loved to play has become a second rate cow pasture with a nasty condescending female pro ringing the cash register as fast as possible to beef up her bonus. Too bad. At one time this course was listed in Golf Digest's top 100. But that's when they had a real pro who knew the game. Not anymore.

I am all for a realistic pace of play. However, the staff spends more time rushing you through your round unrealistically than they do on unrepaired ball marks or unraked bunkers. The pro is unrealistic with her pace of play target times and has turned what was once a well run course into an unrealistic production line.

Course is in decent shape. Unfortunately there are many ball marks on greens as other players do not repair their marks. Not too challenging of a course but enjoyable to play.

Fairways are nothing to write home about. Interesting par 3's well bunkered. Greens will absolutly drive you crazy. Undulating and not easily read.
